Serving the Erie Community | Erie County Medical Society
In recognition of our public service commitment, here are some of the projects in which the Erie County Medical Society has been involved in the last few years.
During this difficult time, it is important to not forget those in our community that are considered food insecure. That is why ECMS did its part to collect donations for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania.
Dr. Jeffrey McGovern, President of ECMS, delivers contributions to Second Harvest from recent drive to support the Erie community.
Anyone who missed the opportunity to donate goods to our collection can still contribute. Visit https://nwpafoodbank.networkforgood.com/ to contribute, and be sure to note in a donor scroll that you are making a contribution as a physician of the Erie Community.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Erie County Medical Society has supported this event and recruited world famous physician Jerri Nielsen, MD to Erie to participate. Dr. Nielsen was team physician to the Antarctic Expedition in 1999 when she discovered a breast lump.
She had to do her own biopsy and give her own chemotherapy until spring arrived and she could be airlifted out of Antartica. She was an enormous inspiration to all women suffering this disease.
Doctors’ Offices Food Collection. We have in the past established stations in doctors' offices for the
collection of over one ton of healthy cereals for Second Harvest Food Bank.
Erie County Bar Association Partnership. The Erie County Medical Society partners with the Erie
County Bar Association in an effort to develop better means to serve the professional needs of the Erie
Child Behavioral Services Workgroup. We participate in this group to support family physicians in the
treatment of child/adolescent behavioral and emotional disorders.
Therapy Dogs United. The Erie County Medical Society strongly supports the work of Therapy Dogs
United in contributing to health and well-being through animal-assisted therapy.
TV Program Focus on Erie Medicine. We were privileged to present this weekly program
on WJET-24 from 1980 to 2011 to disseminate important health information to the Erie
Free Health Care and Screenings to Homeless Women and Children. Our volunteer
physicians provide this needed service to the Erie community through our program
Sheltering the Community.
TV Public Service Announcements on WJET. The Erie County Medical Society thanks
WJET for the opportunity to present timely and authoritative health information to the
Erie community in these topical and regular public service announcements.
ECMS Annual Health Fair. In this event, our member physicians offer free health screening services and health information to the public in a festive atmosphere one weekend each summer.
St. Paul Neighborhood Free Clinic. Some of our dedicated member physicians volunteer at this vitally important clinic to provide free health care to the community's uninsured
Public Health Advocacy. Erie County Medical Society has published position statements and offered authoritative testimony on the health impact of environmental and social issues such as helmets, cell phones, and the proposed tire-burning power plant.
Katrina Relief for Louisiana. We collected and sent medical supplies and personal goods for the injured and homeless hurricane survivors in Baton Rouge.
Tsunami Relief for Sri Lanka. The Erie County Medical Society collected medical supplies and financial aid, with personal oversight of its distribution to injured and homeless Sri Lankan tsunami survivors.
